The difference, as I see it, is historical. For centuries, Christians
ruled rather overwhelmingly and imposed their beliefs rather
forcefully. Forcefully like overbearing taxes by the Church,
imprisoning or killing "heathens" and trying to rule through the Crown
which just had the result of creating a new branch of Christianity
which did much the same things.

Even when you look at Christians in the new world, it has been
noticeably intertwined with local government and the social fabric.
The Bible Belt isn't named that for nothing. Christians still make up
more than 75% of the population in the US, and much of the vast rural
America is still seen with trepidation and even fear by
non-Christians.

So what does this have to do with liberals? Well first of all,
Christian and liberal are not mutually exclusive. So saying that
liberals hate Christians is an over generalization. Some do, a lot
don't. But liberals do hate a hegemony, particularly an oppressive
hegemony, and as I see it THAT is what liberals are protesting
against--Christianity's historical precedents.

A few side-thoughts:
- Christians are protesting as being oppressed despite being over 70%
of the population.
- Liberal outrage against hegemony also requires being in the underdog
role, but they are at about 50%.
- The idea that "liberal thinking should be tolerance and respect, not
license to insult and scandalise" is much like the idea that
Christians should practice the peaceful teachings of Christ. Neither
has historically been true to form.

All the above is just my perspective on the situation, not a defense
or condemnation. Especially not a defense of an "opera" about Jerry
Springer.
