I don't want to belabor Godwin here, but he /sort of/ did. I'm going to
try this without Googling...
After Hitler lost a legitimate election to Hindenberg, the Nazis focused
on gaining power in the Reichstag, at which point, they appointed Hitler
Chancellor ("Me! Chancellor!"). The Nazis then burned down the
Reichstag, blaming it on the German Communist party, and forced
Hindenberg to give the Nazis special powers to pursue the evil commies.
When Hindenberg died a year or so later, Hitler leveraged the power the
Nazis already had to combine the Chancellor and President positions. By
this time, I suppose the German populace was so spooked, they voted
overwhelmingly in favor of the move, making Hitler Fuhrer.
Then, the chorus line comes in...
