Not a problem.

iTunes does 3 things. Each of those 3 things can either be done in iTunes, or
in another application.

1. Music Store. You can buy songs from the iTunes music store. This requires
signup and a credit card. You can also buy songs from Walmart, Napster, etc.

2. Digital Library of songs. This manages your song library. You can add to
this by buying songs above, ripping CDs to mp3s, or copying mp3 files from
elsewhere (usenet, napster, etc). You can burn CDs, play songs out your
computer speakers, and "tag" songs with metadata information. This can also be
done with MusicMatch, Winamp, etc.

3. File Transfer Utility. This allows you to copy songs to and from your
digital device (be it an iPod, iPod Shuffle, or Creative Labs Nomad.) There are
lots of other programs that can handle this upload/download. (Maybe not for the
shuffle yet, but that is only a few days away, I'd bet). Anapod, CopyPod,
EphPod, etc

Sorry if I'm being dense - but, does this mean that you have to subscribe to
iTunes in order to copy music from a CD to the iPod?

Thanks,

Howie
