I'm pretty sure you can drag files directly onto the iPod family of
products, however, to manage playlists and other features, it's really
a good idea to use the iTunes music player.

iTunes is free software, and a great MP3 management system.  I was a
die hard WinAmp fan for along time, and think that iTunes blows away
WinAmp as a MP3 management system.  I especially love the Smart
Playlist feature that lets you create a dynamic playlists based not
only on any ID3 info in the MP3, but also number of times played, last
played, etc...

I've got smart playlists for music I haven't played yet, music I added
in the past 2 weeks, and music I listen to most.  It's very cool.
