Very true - for as well-designed as Panther is, the updates are 
ham-fisted.  Windows Update does a good job of looking at what you have, 
then applying updates as necessary.

Although, I wonder if the iCal update contains something that, say, 
would deny access to some minor worm which, though you may not use it, 
exploits some iCal weakness.

I kind of doubt it, considering the carpet-bomb approach to updates 
Apple seems to have.  I hope they can be a little more intelligent about 
it.  Believe me, I'll update my iSight software as often as necessary... 
as soon as I get an iSight...  How difficult would it be to say "Hey, 
this is the first time you've installed an iPod!  We've got a metric ton 
of software for you to download first..." - annoying, but not unexpected.
