I'm glad someone here can do math. :)

It's also worth pointing out that we are really comparing apples to
oranges when we compare SS "savings" to participation in the stock
market. There is no such thing as a SS saving account. SS is
designed so that the money you put in goes directly back out to
someone collecting social security. No interest, no savings, poof,
it's gone!

I know this is remidial to some, but I don't think some of the folks
on this list understand how SS works. At the start there were a
buncha people paying in and hardly any collecting, something like
20:1. I think now we are closer to 3:1, and in a couple of decades it
will be closer to 1:1.

Currently your money, for all intents and purposes, is getting a zero
percent return.

The "Social Security Fund" is just a buildup to make help ease the
pain when the baby boomers age and every one of us is supporting one
other human being's living expenses. The math doesn't work, and the
money is going to run out one way or another. I suppose if we let
that happen the crisis will be blamed on whoever is in office that
year. I wonder if it will be a Democrat or a Republican?

And besides, who actually WANTS to government investing their money?
Do you REALLY think that the govt can so a better job managing your
money that you can? It's YOUR money they are shitting away after all.
