Use the wings to get better leverage.  See my notes with regard to Emu. 
  Also, filghtless birds do tend to be slipperier, making getting a good 
grip harder.  Although that does give an advantage in the slide, as 
noted below.

True.  If we're counting slide distance (instead of first contact) then 
penguins would work well.  Also, seals and other "hairless" mammals. 
For a real challenge, try tossing orca.  Killer!

See?  When tossing, say, and albatross, you can use the wings instead of
the legs for a good grip.  Also, you get extra points if you get it hung
around someone's neck.  :-)
