Here are the common arguments: (1.) The Slippery Slope argument. --------------------------------------------------------------- "If we allow gays to marry, what's next? Men and children? Donkeys?" Problem: ------------- The law and most people would agree that an adult of sound mind should be able to enter into a contract with another adult of sound mind given both parties are willing participants. This is their "pursuit of happiness". Children and donkeys are not of "sound mind" and therefore not able to enter into contracts. (2.) The Majority argument. ----------------------------------------------------------------- "The majority of Americans don't want gay marriage so why should the few decide for the many?" Problem: ------------- The question isn't gay marriage or no gay marriage - it comes down to liberty and pursuit of happiness. Should we allow every American pursuit of happiness or should we limit some Americans based on arbitrary limitations that are, by definition, not egalitarian? (3.) The Bible says it's wrong. ---------------------------------------- "God says gay sex is wrong." Problem: ------------- As anyone who's read the Bible knows, it says many things depending on how you read it and who translated it. Therefore the real question is, how do we view the Bible (or Torah)? Is it a philosophical text meant to inspire rather than direct, or is it a directive text meant to be taken literally? If it's a directive text then we should all take down our pictures of family because the Bible forbids it. If it's philosophical, then Gay Marriage is fine.
