I'm ready for Trek to die. Deep Space Nine sucked for a long time until they got into the Dominion Wars. I can't even say how much Voyager sucked in its first two seasons. Remember Tess? They had like half a season of crap about her. Then they went and got into the whole Borg war, which was step in the right direction. I got busy after that and stopped following it regularly. I never saw an episode of Enterprise.
Someone needs to come up with a new sci-fi show that: 1. doesn't completely suck (e.g. Earth- Final Conflict) 2. has cool aliens and is actually set in space. Forget this Earth stuff. 3. has an appreciation of the epic genre. My own personal bias, but sci-fi to me is most interesting in large scale, not in personal stories. Plus it's much easier to keep a series going in the epic genre than in the small scale. Personal stories can be subplots, and occasionally you can have an episode with a personal story as the main plotline, but you need the epic scale to keep people interested in the series. Take Babylon 5. That show sucked for quite a while when it first started, but once the writers figured out the genre- e.g. have these three races fighting each other, bring in this mysterious superbeing race on the side, and then bring in the really bad guys to kick everyone's asses and fuse together the whole story- once they figured that out, it became a real success. On exception to the Trek must die thesis- I would watch a show about a war between the Klingons and the Borg. That would be cool.
