You can't overwrite the registry files while they are in use, also, many of
things you will be looking for are not in the registry, but are stored in
other metabases.

The ntoskernl error is pretty generic, can be caused by a number of issues,
including bad sectors and a corrupt file system. Have you done an fdisk /mbr
