Too true. Perhaps it's just coincidence, perhaps it's the crushing weight
of stupidity, but since my company was bought by a much larger company two
years ago five of my close co-workers have needed to go disability (two
heart attacks, one bad back, one nervous breakdown and one case of lung
cancer).

The company DI plan costs in the range of $8 a week and pays full salary for
2 months (short term) and then 65% of your salary after that until you're
not disabled.

There are also some Annuity vehicles that can help in this regard. We offer
at least one product that offers a Guaranteed Minimum Income Benefits or
Guaranteed Withdrawal Benefits. These can both help should your income
level drop drastically for any reason.

(I know this because it's now my job to add these riders to our online
account management system. ;^) )

Erika's completely correct that if you don't have family to take of life
insurance is probably a waste of money - but Disability insurance your own
sweet ass - and that's always worth every penny. ;^)
