I've recently (finally!) fixed a long standing problem with my computer and
games (I was able to play through Half-Life 2 with no problems - but shortly
after I couldn't play anything for more than 5 minutes without the system
crashing).

Well - after a firmware upgrade for the video card those problems went away
(and I got a significant amount of performance back).

So I decided to try Far Cry - I've been playing when I can (not much) and
I'm only up to the beginning of the "research" level (number four, I think).

So far I'm very impressed. The physics and appearance of the game easily
equal Half-Life 2. The story is less compelling (at least so far) and even
this early in the game the "Dr Moreau" influence is screaming, but still - a
classic plot is still a classic plot.

But I have to say that HL2 has really spoiled me. You have so very little
control over the environment that it's really frustrating.

If a barrel is lying on its side you can charge it and roll it down a hill -
but you can't lift it and carry it someplace. You can see the desk, but you
can't move it across the doorway.

It just reminding of a passage from "Extraterrestrial Civilizations" by
Isaac Asimov. In it he talks about Dolphin intelligence and how most marine
life is limited to streamlined bodies to cut down on water resistance.

Hands and other "bumpy" protrusions work best in the air. (There are
exceptions and of course Dolphin intelligence most likely evolved on land,
but the point remains.)

Dolphins being streamlined can only affect their surroundings via their
mouths or the brute force of their bodies. They can hit (for example) a
barrel to knock it over, but can't carry it or throw it or stack it.

As legitimately great as Far Cry is I still feel like a dolphin - like I can
see and hear everything but just can't touch it. Half-Life 2 gave me hands
- and as impressed as I was with it when I played it, I'm even more
impressed now playing another game and not having that freedom.

Just something I was thinking about.
