I had surgery on my right hand and feel it was the right choice for me. I did lose a small amount of control but I was so bad I could no longer open door knobs. I rarely have problems with that hand anymore short of a marathon session in bad ergonomics. They usually will try other things first though. Get a wrist brace and wear it at night especially. You don't realize it, but most people tend to sleep with their wrists bent inward, which further compresses the area.
I never did have surgery on my left hand. It still wakes me up going numb at night. I should probably take my own advice and get a brace for it again.
