What most people do not realize is that the tube does not go into the mouth, down the throat and then into the stomach. The feeding tube is inserted directly into the stomach - a surgeon makes the incision in the abdomen, throught the abdominal wall, and into the stomach, then is secured. Its performed under anesthesia (local at least).
So it is an invasive medical procedure with a fair degree of risk, and it is the patient's right (through their medical guardian in this case) to refuse treatment.
