Dickens is reasonably recent tho... this was pre-dickens I believe that I remember that being said about (in the book Technopoly I think... might have been Amusing Ourselves to Death, but I think it was Technopoly -- Neil Postman - same author)... Relatively speaking, Dickens wasn't long before the industrial revolution.
