If you want to use the same drives it may be easiest to dump them all into a tower case with a cheapy motherboard and just create a dedicated file server. You can put as many PCI disk controllers into as you like (RAID or not) and as many drives as you can fit (with a nice big case you can easily drop in 12 drives. Throw something like Windows 2000 or Linux on it and you'd got a fast file server that's more functional than any dedicated hardware and cheaper to boot. Most of the dedicated tower arrays are just super cheap Linux-on-chip set-up anyway but they cost you five time more than a PC.
