Well I had to put a twist on your categories to make it fit. I agree
with Matt that you were more describing socialists. Sure some liberals
are socialists, but that's not really liberalism per se, it's just the
facet of liberalism that embraces the right of the individual "to
dissent from orthodox tenets or established authorities in political
or religious matters".

To me, at its core, being a liberal means I support individual
liberty. There are Republican liberals, Democrat liberals, Libertarian
liberals, etc that argue over details of how that is accomplished. An
Independent is just someone that hasn't picked a political party and
they can be either liberal or conservative.

Basically, liberals embrace change and new ideas and conservatives are
opposed to change and are in favor of stability.

Of course, people being people there is no one label that fits
everybody. Every opinion and decision is weighed by personal
experiences and on some issues a person who is typically liberal may
be conservative and vice versa. Which is why I really don't care for
over generalized labels.
