Thanks for checking when I get home in a few hours I'll check out all that has been suggested.
I should note that performance has degraded over time. It was not always like this. When we bought the computer last fall it worked fine. It came installed with XP home, so it should have the necessary resources, since when we first used it all was fine. Our home network currently only consists of two computers. My wife's is the laptop and it connects wirelessly to the Linksys router, usually just across the living room on top of the bookcase. She does occasionally take the computer to the bedroom. The second computer is my desktop; it is connected to the router with a network cable.
