I just bought 2 servers from Dell – PowerEdge 1800s. I had a surge that
(beat the protector and) basically killed my P3 800 running Novell. My tech
really wanted me to go with Dell for support. I was skeptical – thought the
price would easily be beaten if I built it myself.

For my tech, I bought 1 Dell, and went shopping to build a web server. The Dell
came with a 2nd Xeon Proc. “for free”. The goal was to rip the 2nd proc.
out of the Dell and build a web server around it. I’m very partial to Intel
boards.

Even with the free processor to play with, I couldn’t beat the price of the
Dell. Then, there was the building issue(s) to consider. A week or so later, I
bought the 2nd Dell PE 1800 for about $1,100. The machine might be light for
you – I didn’t put much into it. I just want to serve a fairly basic
website.

I’m far from a computer pro in any category. When I was on eBay looking to
buy an Intel mobo, the seller was a little miffed that I was looking at Dell:
“I can’t see what people like so much about Dell” – or something like
that.

What do you think about Dell? If there’s no problem, you might want to check
them out. I think they are still running the “get the 2nd Xeon Free!” deal.

Also, why Windows 2003 Web Server over Server Standard or Enterprise?

Thanks - Chris
