Maybe I'm stereotyping, but I think the reason Mr. Kerry was "out of
step" with the military is because he's an extremely wealthy easterner
and always has been (if only in heart).

The enlisted are all generally working class.  They're not going to
identify with a guy who sails and attends country clubs; they'll
identify with a guy who owns a ranch and wears jeans.

They're not going to understand a guy who volunteered for combat when
he didn't have to - they'll identify with a guy who used his
connections to get a cushy stateside post because that's what they
would've done.

Mr. Kerry's mistake was thinking that just because he attended the
dance he'd be elected king.  He never recovered from the swift boat
debacle which cost him the swing vote.  Chasing the youth vote was the
nail in the coffin.

Put another way, it was an extremely close election that was won on
strategy rather than mandate; which is why Mr. Bush's numbers have
gone back to the toilet.
