I think that the "24" concept makes the show much much better. Instead of dragging the show out into several days, you get the feeling of urgency, since you know the day only has 24 hours. Makes you more nervous, as in "What is he going to do? There are only 3 hours left in the day!".
The greatest thing that I like is the over-the-top-ness. I mean, what other show has the balls to have Air Force One shot down? And succeed? I really enjoy the "Holy crap - there is no way they are going to shoot down A.F.O.!". Then they do it. And leave you hanging right there. I mean, how can you NOT watch the next week? Brilliant! Wait till you newbies see how President Palmer takes action starting next week. That guy is the best President ever! Terrorist ass-whuppin begins on the 25th!
