Honestly I wouldn't pay for any of the extras you've mentioned (or even to
get rid of the ads).

However I would happily pay for the lists themselves. Personally I would
focus on your strength - the lists.

Some things I might find valuable additions in relation to the lists:

+) An improved search facility just for paying members. The plebes get
Google.

+) Some completely substanceless pride-stroking recognition. (For example
paying members are listed as "Gold Members" on the messages... oh I would so
dearly love to be a gold member!)

+) The abilty to get a "Printable Archive" of a thread or message (perhaps
as simple as giving members a link to create a PDF out of any
thread/message).

+) The ability to mark threads as "ignore" or "watch" (preferably via links
in the messages). "ignored" threads would stop coming to me while "watched"
threads might come with (a filterable) prefix on the message subject.

+) In a similar vein the ability to mark list members as "Watch" or "Ignore"
to either get an extra emphasis on some person's messages or to stop
receiving anothers.

+) A "Favorites" list (again, preferably via a link in the message itself)
allowing me to mark a message as a "favorite". I could then hit the web
site and view a list of only my favorites.

+) The ability to rank messages and/or participants. If somebody is
constantly wrong you can give them a low ranking, for example, if they're
constantly helpful then you can give them a high ranking. Taking it further
perhaps only paying members could see the rankings.

That's off the top of my head - I'm sure there are dozens of other things
that could be done as well. While some of them might mean extensive
development I think at least a few of them could be done quickly and
cheaply.

As I said - the lists themselves are plenty worth paying for as they are.
But if you want to add value to them I think there's a lot of ways to do
that.
