That's a total overstatement. I can't afford a house within 8 miles of my work. I live 14 miles from downtown. Were I to walk or bike, that would be 28 miles per day... Houses within 3 miles of work are at the minimum $350,000, with $500,000+ more the norm. This is Charlotte we're talking about. Many people just don't live in areas where the convenience of walking is an option, and living closer isn't either.
