Because we should be embracing any technologies serve to move us
towards the goals of reduced dependency on fossil fuels AND reduced
pollution.

Hybrid does improve mileage as well as emissions, and working with
hybrid tech will lead to improvements in electric/battery tech. The
battery in the Prius is already half the size between the first and
second generations. Diesel has good mileage and the emissions can be
reduced. Diesel and hybrid can even be complementary tech in a single
car.

Picking one tech over the other is just closing doors to innovation.
