Well - it's not just Lucas.  The original "Batman" movie (and I'll guess the
new one) had the same problem: how do you tell a kid whose gotten all the
McDonald's toys, all the action figures and so forth that the movie is "only
for grown ups"?

Most comic book and sci-fi movies (and a lot of video games) have the same
problem to some extent.  The "X-Men" and "Star Trek" movies, for example,
were pretty mature.

I remember there was talk of legislation to attempt to limit the marketing
of PG-13 and above movies to children via toy tie-ins.  It would have failed
miserably, of course, but the issue has been hashed through before.
