The U.N. is not a global government. It has no authority over anything. It owns no territory. It has no citizens. It possesses no resources other than what it's members give it. At best it is a useful tool to help nations dialogue with each other and solve problems. At worst it is a debating society for tyrants and despots. Who cares what Syria thinks? Or Sudan?
When you say, "The rest of the world", how are you calculating that, exactly? Apparently you believe Britain, Australia, Spain, and most of Central Europe (whose citizens well remember living under the thumb of brutal dictators) are not part of "the rest of the world"? Knocking out Saddam was doable and it was in the our best interest. Spreading freedom is always in our best interest. And before you start boo-hooing about why we haven't attacked Iran or North Korea, I will explain. I would hope that the answers are clear, but just in case, here you go: - North Korea could wipe out South Korea in 24 hours with just the conventional weaponry at their disposal. Nuclear weapons give them the ability to threaten Japan as well. The possible risks are far too high for us to use military force against them. - Iran has lots of weaponry at its disposal and we are already stretched thin in Iraq. But don't count them out of the mix for an ass-whupping later. (just thought I'd throw that in for style point.
