Is there only one connector on the board?  Usually there are two - but with
a multi-controller board you may be out of luck.

You generally don't want to have a hard drive sharing a channel with an
optical drive (the IDE bus tends to adapt to the speed of the slowest
component on it.

However you still have options.  Here's a little gee gaw that converts an
ATA drive to SATA:

At $30 it's a little pricey compared to the cost of a new SATA drive - but
it is cheaper than a new drive (especially if the drive in question is a big
one).  Using this you could connect your old drive directly to your SATA
controller. 

You could also buy an empty external enclosure (USB 2.0 or Firewire).  Speed
is pretty good for both (better for Firewire - but no clouch for USB 2.0)
but they tend to be pretty pricey as well.  If the drive is less than 100
Gig you might find it cheaper to get a new SATA drive.
