I think some of them are substance abusers who have hit bottom. The
problem is, as previously noted, that it is pretty hard to to get off
the street once you are on it. Possibly you could get work as a day
laborer if there is nobody else available. But if you're sleeping in
doorways there's a lot working against you showing up on time. Around
here, the police are apparently notorious for arresting people for
vagrancy and not returning their ID. Those people are then totally
screwed in terms of a straight job.

There are all sorts of hidden homeless populations though; not
everyone is the stereotypical deranged single male. Around here we get
a lot of army vets living up in the canyons. Hell, I qualified as
homeless when we were in a motel waiting for FEMA to come through.
