  I'm not sure if I completely agree here.
  As an example, I have my "Base Contract" for consulting 
services.  However many clients negotiate different things (Ownership of 
code, price, and advance are 3 that come up commonly).  Everything is 
negotiable.  But, after all is said and done, they are all getting the same 
product (My Brain).

  I can call a local designer that I know and he'll create a logo for me 
for $50.  I bet he'll charge more if IBM were to come knocking on his door.

   The company was negotiating in an attempt to keep the business.  That 
seems like a reasonable stance.  Perhaps instead of asking the company "why 
didn't you offer me X price before" you should ask the client (yourself) 
"Why didn't I ask for a better price before).

   This whole conversation reminds me a bit of one of the Apprentice 
episodes.  They were selling candy bars.  And the guy goes to "Team 
2".  "You're only selling it for x amount? Sure, I'll take it.  Some people 
around the corner were selling it for Y"
