Basically, many people don't critically analyze politicians anymore.
In fact there is very little "news" - most of it is just presenting 2
spins and then you have to pick the side you support.
People are outsourcing their critical analysis to talk radio hosts.
This is how you explain a whole contingent of people in 2000 bashing
nation building ("the military is to fight and win wars and thus
prevent war, not to nation build") and government spending.
What we have today is the exact opposite (nation building and out of
control spending), but those same people are now all for it.
