All right - I'll throw out an opinion. I think it depends. I think it
depends primarily on how much assisting the person needs, and how
willing they are to be assisted from afar.

For instance, let's say I assist you. You send me some info with some
deadlines. Me, being the good assistant that I am, make up some nicely
regressed timelines based off the deadlines, so that on due date -10,
I call you and say - "Erika - you have 10 days to complete project y.
You should have finished a, b, and c by now. Where are you at?" You
could say, "Um, yah, those are totally done. You bet."

How the hell do I know if you're lying? Now, depending on the kind of
work, I could possibly view it online. But, other kinds of work - not
so much (client meetings, prep work, etc).

So, it still comes down to how motivated and honest you are, which
begs the question of why you need the assistant and what the role of
the assistant really is.

Besides, it'd be damn hard for me to deliver a nice iced mocha latte
from up here in Wisconsin - and we all know that's what assistants are
really good for. ;)

Course, all that being said - my DH is a stay at home dad. ;)
