Pitch Black wasn't really made on its plot/story tho... or for that
matter even its special effects (although some of them were pretty
cool)... imo it was really made on its characterizations and dialog --
in spite of the fact that Riddick was in some ways a bit of a "canned"
character ... The sequel not so much -- more of a special effects
flick, although still good and still had some good dialogue (although
the characterizations were a bit weaker imo).

The animated story which takes place between them is a little too much
coincidence (they get off of the planet where they crashed and then
are immediately picked up by a ship full of bounty hunters looking for
Riddick specifically, but not to settle a score, but rather a "fan" of
his work). It has some great dialog as well and some pretty visually
exciting animation in spite of the animation style being a tad crude
(Akira it's not).
