The 11b (2.4 GHz) band is actually about 80 MHz wide, having room for 13 (?) 6 MHz sub-bands. Those sub-bands have to be a little bit apart to be truely non-overlapping, so within that 80MHz band you can have 3 non-interfering channels. If you have multiple access points you can create contiguous coverage by setting the bands on different APs to 1, 6 and 11 or to 3, 8 and 13 etc. The device wil pick the strongest channel and will hop channels when moving around. If you have interference problems changing the channel might help.
