Exactly - but even in that randomness there is predictability and
boundaries.  Mutations aren't truly "anything-can-happen" events (although
they can be damn wierd).

A silly example: no mutation would ever produce an Ant the size of a city
bus.  Physically and biologically such a creature could never survive.

It's also tremendously unlikely (tho' admittedly not impossible) that we'll
ever see "comic-book-style" mutations with fully developed features from
other species.  Simple mutation is not going to develop a monkey with wings
or a dog with an elephant's trunk.  ;^)
