Depends on what you are fusing exactly. If you fuse deuterium with deuterium, 
you produce pure helium without any byproducts. But it is hard to do a 
deuterium-deuterium fusion, so it is more likely they will fuse deuterium and 
tritium. That produces one neutron for each event, and the neutron would 
probably be captured by the reactor wall. So you get excess neutrons in the 
reactor wall, causing it to decay gradually.

Deuterium doesn't matter, it is trivial to transport it once hou have extracted 
it.
