Because the alternative will limit (eliminate?) the number of positive
confidential sources reporters receive which may actually help a bad
situation. We're cutting off a finger so that we can punish someone
who made us stub a toe. I guess the fear is that the precedent of
allowing it will cause them to make us stub our toe so often that
we'll have to amputate it. This might be seen as a major boon to
people in power who are doing bad things since they'll have to worry a
lot less about the potential of whistle-blowers.
