Because it sets a precedent for a reporter being forced to reveal
their source... Doesn't matter whether that source is a whistleblower
or not. A whistleblower is a reporter's confidential source. A
reporter can be forced to give up their sources. Bye bye
whistleblowers. Maybe not all of them, but the loss of just one or two
has the potential to cause more damage than the guy they're being
forced to give up.

There are always tough decisions that have to be made. In this case,
protect a govt agent or protect the ability of reporters to get
confidential sources. I don't personally believe this was a
conspiracy, but the case could be made that if a person wanted to
influence the culture so as to make it easier for people in the
government to hide their malfeasance, this would be a good way to
accomplish that.
