You must remember the majority of America was gained by purchase or by war with other established countries. Most of the US was gained through the Louisiana Purchase, the war with Mexica and different treaties with England. And don't forget Sewards Folly(Alaska).
We let England, France, and Spain do most of the Indian killing. By the time America came out to the new land the Indians were too tired and sick to fight.
