Yeah - we actually discussed this with the hospital before the birth. Mass General is actually really good in this regard. They've got a general "hands off" policy until labor goes more than 24 hours or there's problems (in our case there were problems). The delivery rooms are large and somewhat comfortable from dad's perspective (there's a small fold out bed/chair thingie so I was able to snatch a little sleep) and several feature whirlpools and two-person bathtubs. In our case the problem was that my wife was preeclampsic and needed several IVs and was attached to an automated blood pressure monitor... because of the drugs they inserted a fetal monitor and because of all that she needed a catheter. She was essentially stapled to the bed. The drugs for the preeclampsia interfered with the labor so they administered Pitossin to try and keep the labor moving but it was very slow. They didn't want her (or especially the baby) on the drugs for too long so near the end they got a little aggressive with the pushing and the episiotomy. But in general they don't do them there that often (or at least our midwife claimed she rarely did them). They didn't even mention the possibility of it with my daughter (although she came very quickly). But, aside from a few small complaints, I can't say enough good about Mass General's maternity unit.
