When I worked for NEC (many moons ago) their digital telehones had a display that, among other things, showed the date and time. The hour/minute were separated by a colon that blinked every second. Well...turns out that someone had a patent on that and NEC had to make the colon solid instead of blinking and we had to update tons of phone system software to do that ...
