I really loves my Outlook... but are you talking about Outlook or Outlook Express? Two very different animals... like comparing horses to horseflies. In Outlook it sounds like you've got an automatic Send/Receive scheduled... or multiple ones. You should look and try to clear it out/clean it up. I've had problems where I've had two scheduled tasks to the same server but the server was configured to only allow a certain number of connections. So it would do something like your seeing: throw up a box (because in fact the connection was refused) then work immediately (because by the time I typed everything in the connection conflict was gone).
