I'm sure any puppy would love having another pup to play with all day, but it's not essential....nor would I even recommend it for your first time. Start with one puppy, see how that goes first. If you decide you'd love another dog, go for it. First pups can be a handful all by themselves, since you're learning as you're going.
As for dogs being lonely by themselves, I'm just not sure that's true. My puppy, and Robyn's will be in the same boat, got to explore an expansive backyard all day! With so many sights and smells, she seemed to keep herself pretty occupied till I got home from work.
