My Grandfather was similar. A few of his better stories were flying the gravel for McArthur's driveway and flying co-pilot with Charles Lindhberg. He also had a disturbing story: A shipment of supplies had to divert from Guadalcanal to Australia due to the war. At the time my Grandfather was making the opposite run: troops back to Australia, empty to Guadal. The ship had to unload to leave so he and few other guys loaded up tons of booze, cigarettes, gum, etc. and flew it to Guadalcanal. They landed and opened up shop on the runway "selling" the goods for whatever the combat marines cared to trade. A marine, fresh from the jungle, came to their table and offered a "bag of gold" for some smokes and whiskey. They gave it to him and didn't getting around to checking out the bag until the next day. It was full of gold fillings. He also got a jewel encrusted Japanese officer's sword amongst other things ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~| Discover CFTicket - The leading ColdFusion Help Desk and Trouble Ticket application http://www.houseoffusion.com/banners/view.cfm?bannerid=48 Message: http://www.houseoffusion.com/lists.cfm/link=i:5:169182 Archives: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/threads.cfm/5 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/lists.cfm/link=s:5 Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=89.70.5 Donations & Support: http://www.houseoffusion.com/tiny.cfm/54
