I think that these insurgents are anti-"anybody being in control other than the people they support"
I don't think the insurgents would know what to do if the US left. But what I am wondering is whether we have not kept on breaking it. Here's the heart of the matter - these "insurgents" - are they really anti-democracy and anti-progress, or just anti-American? If the latter, continued American presence in Iraq is just a waste of good soldiers. However, there is no way that I can see to determine this short of withdrawal.
