That doesn't sound right... I know he loved the "Tarzan" character (and the
original book, at least, is really far from hackneyed - it's quite good
actually).

I know that the "Mars" stories - which were originally published as a
serial, not a book, were published under a nom de plume.  He was afraid that
he'd be made fun of so he used the name "Normal Bean" (a joke indicating
that he was just a regular guy).  The story goes, however, that the
typesetter assumed it was a typo and changed it in printing to "Norman Bean"

Once the stories (the first 6 or 12 that later became the finished the first
book) became such a success he began using his real name.  ;^)

Of course he also did a mess of "Venus" books as well - maybe those are the
ones you heard about (I've not read them... but I know they came after the
Mars books).
