As I've said, this thread was more to understand issues of awareness
and relevance than it was to focus in particularly on the issue in
Japan. Is it that I'm uninformed? Is it a media issue? Is Japan not as
relevant as I thought? Is our preoccupation with our own problems
simply drowning out the rest of the world? As Jochem's question
suggests is it just a question of a big deal at their local level that
won't really change the status quo beyond their borders?

I can certainly find reference to the issue in US media if I
specifically look for it, but it didn't just filter to the top in my
normal news consumption. It's interesting hearing that it did for
other people, so there's an aspect of my own behavior involved.

For those interested in more detail on the Postal Reform debate in
Japan, here's the blog articles got me started down that path:

(I should mention that while those stories are work safe that I can't
attest to the same for the rest of the site.)
