I like Eclipse a lot now, but I am fully in agreement with your sentiment. The biggest deficiencies in open source saftware always seem to be in the areas of human-computer interaction and documentation. The former is its own science and the companies that are best at it (e.g. Apple) spend serious money on the challenges in HCI; The latter- technical writing- is a different skillset, too. I never saw many engineers in my literature classes in school.
