just playing Devil's Advocate here but my take is that maybe (just -maybe-)...
The Google logos that they put up to mark a specific day are seen as
somewhat light-hearted. A cute little heart-emblazoned logo to
commemorate Valentine's Day. Festive little fireworks in the
background to commemorate the 4th of July. Mathematical functions to
commemorate Einstein's birthday.
All very "cute"...meant to elicit a chuckle or even some of that viral
marketing that Google is so known for ("hey, check out what Google did
with their logo today to commemorate Arbor Day. They replaced the 'L'
in 'google' with a tree! neat.").
Maybe a someber remembrance of the occassion doesn't really fit in
with their jovial little manipulations of their logo to reflect other
(happier) days.
Could they have done something tasteful? Sure. A small "we remember"
tagline or some such. Should they have? Dunno. Did every other
major website do something to mark the occassion? I'm sure some
did...but I'm also sure that all did not. Just because Google has
chosen to "get cute" with their banner/logo on other days doesn't
necessarily obligate them to do something to commemorate -every- day
of significance.
It would have been nice gesture, sure. But I dont' think Google's
obligated (any more than any other company...dot-com or otherwise) to
do anything just because they've chosen to do "cute things" in the
past with their logo (and it's the fact that the other things they've
done can be called "cute" that leads me to think that's the precise
reason why they did not do anything).
