I've just ordered (and am in the laborious process of configuring) a dedicated server at CrystalTech - $80/month gets you a Celeron 1800, 512 meg of RAM (I wish I could upgrade that) and and 80 Gig disk on Windows 2003 Standard. You also get a 50 sites license for SmarteraMail and SmarterStats and the Serv-U FTP server. You also get lots of space on a (shared) dedicated SQL Server box (although you can install SQL Server or whatever you like on your personal box). You need to buy your own copy of CF... but I assume that you've already got that. ;^) The server is managed via Remote Desktop (you can install any software you can download to it or Send CrystalTech a disc and licensing info and they'll do it). I only mention it because such a thing might be cost-comparative with a business account and you get more stability (at least for me - my power goes out for more than four hours at least twice a year). But the issues are really the same - you might hit the CrystalTech knowledge base and review their technotes for setting up the dedicated server. You need to decide: +) Will you run your own DNS server or outsource it (probably to the resistrar)? +) Will you host email? If so you need an email server and probably a virus protection solution for it. I just bought "Trend Micro Client-Server SMB Suite" because it was cheap and works well with SmarterMail. It's $140 for 5 licenses (the minimum you can buy). Still $140 for 5 licenses is cheap - but I rather have spent $28 for one license. +) Will you host FTP? You'll need to set it up and protect it. +) Will you host NNTP or anything else like it (again, you'll need to set up and protect it)? The pain of configuration really depends on how many services you'll be running and how many domains you have to set up (I'm setting up 17 domains so it's a royal pain in the ass). Personally it would be more money for me to set up a dedicated server at home than it would to set up the CrystalTech server I've got. However my sites, all together, get only dozens of hits a day. ;^) If you need more horsepower than the Celeron server will provided costs go up and up (the next level, a P4 with twice the RAM run $169/month at CrystalTech, for example). Still - all told the cost of dedicated hosting is heading south pretty quick.
