My guess is that they'll leave this unexplained. I really doubt ANY explanation the producers come up with will be completely satisfying on all levels in the end. I think there are going to be dozens of things that you'll say "but that doesn't cover that!" or "but how did that happen?" You'll just have to suspend disbelief for a lot of stuff. ;^) As for the gas you might assume that they had a supply to begin with. Since it seems they can't permanently leave the island it's not too far out to assume that they would hoard it and just not use the boat much. But for a chance to obtain "the child" they used up some of their precious fuel. Of course that's just rationalizing... but I think it makes sense.
